Overview:

The Grant Identification Number is also commonly referred to as Assignment Number, Application Number, or the Award Identification Number, depending upon its processing status. The identification number consists of several parts, each having a distinct meaning. The following example highlights each part of the award identification number.

Application Type:

A single-digit code identifying the type of application received and processed. Frequently used codes include:

  • 1 = New

  • 2 = Renewal

  • 3 = Revision (for Supplemental funding)

  • 4 = Extension - for R37 MERIT Awards

  • 5 = Continuation

  • 7 = Change of Grantee Institution

  • 8 = Change of NIH Institute (Noncompeting)

  • 9 = Change of NIH Institute (Competing)

A three-digit code identifying a specific category of extramural activity. Some examples include:

Serial Number:

A six-digit number generally assigned sequentially to a series within an Institute, Center, or Division.

 

Grant Year:

A two-digit number indicates the actual segment or budget period of a project. The grant years, for example -01, -02, etc. are preceded by a dash to separate it from the serial number. The grant year is increased by one for each succeeding year.

 

Other:

The letter "S", for Revision (for Supplemental funding) and related number identify a particular supplemental record. For example; S1, S2. Supplement designations follow the grant year or the amendment designation.

 

The letter "A", for Resubmission, (commonly referred to as an Amendment) and related number identify a particular amendment record, follows the grant year or supplement suffix to identify resubmitted applications.
